VISITOR CENTER:
The Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center, located at the east end of the Main Dam Road, is a great place to begin your visit to Lake Shelbyville and learn about the recreational opportunities available. A video presentation, interactive computer station, as well as a variety of additional exhibits invite you to learn more about Lake Shelbyville and the plants and animals that live in the area.
Visitor Center hours: May 24 – August 25: DAILY 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
August 26 – October 27: Saturdays & Sundays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
THINGS TO DO:
Tours of the Dam: They start at the Visitor Center and last about one hour. Tours are held from Memorial Day Weekend until Labor Day on Saturdays and Sundays.
Saturdays at 3 p.m.
Sundays at 11 a.m.
Environmental Interpretation Programs: Park rangers present programs on a number of topics related to the natural and cultural history of the Lake Shelbyville area, as well as programs about safety. Evening programs are presented in selected campgrounds at the amphitheaters during the weekends. Water safety programs are presented randomly at the public beaches throughout the summer. All programs are free and are fun for the entire family. Look for Program flyers posted in the campgrounds and at the Visitor Center.
Trails: Experience one of Lake Shelbyville’s many hiking trails:
Chief Illini Trail (11 miles)
1978 Trail (1.2 miles)
1979 Bike/Hiking Trail (5 miles located at Camp Camfield)
Coon Creek Nature Trail (3/4 mile)
Okaw Bluff Wetland Trail (1.2 miles)
Wolf Creek and Eagle Creek State Parks along with the Shelbyville Fish and Wildlife Management Areas also
offer several hiking trails.
